The Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) at the Greater Toronto Airports Authority Fire and Emergency Services Training Institute is offered in accordance with International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) and International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) under license number 00719.This course was developed as a fair and valid evaluation tool to assist in the selection of firefighters, and to ensure that all fire fighter candidates possess the physical ability to complete critical tasks effectively and safely. This is a very physically demanding test which requires you to be in good physical condition.

The CPAT consists of eight separate events. This test is a series of procedures that requires the candidate to progress along a predetermined path from event to event in a continuous manner. During the entire test the candidate must wear a 50lb. weighted vest (simulating the weight of a fire fighters protective clothing and equipment). This is a pass or fail test based on a maximum total time of 10 minutes and 20 seconds. If time elapses prior to the completion of the test, the test is concluded and the candidate fails. All candidates will be given the opportunity to participate in two Orientations and two Timed Trials prior to the actual CPAT testing.
CPAT EIGHT SEQUENTIAL EVENTS:
• Stair Climb (climbing stairs while carrying an additional 25lb. simulated hose pack) 
• Hose Drag (stretching uncharged hose lines, advancing lines)
• Equipment Carry (removing and carrying equipment from fire apparatus to fire ground)
• Ladder Raise and Extension (placing a ground ladder at the fire scene and extending the ladder to the roof or a window)
• Forcible Entry (penetrating a locked door, breaching a wall)
• Search (crawling through dark unpredictable areas to search for victims)
• Rescue Drag (removing victim or partner from a fire building)
• Ceiling Pull (locating fire and checking for fire extension)

Fire and Emergency Services Training Institute will provide the foremost opportunity for applicants to prepare for the CPAT. Applicants are strongly encouraged to participate in scheduled orientation sessions within eight weeks prior to their CPAT date. The on-site Fitness Orientation session provides you the opportunity to view the CPAT events, talk with instructors, physically examine test equipment, tools and props and practice. The orientations are conducted in small groups and pre-registration and payment is required. Remember that it is the responsibility of the applicant to be familiar with CPAT procedures and expectations prior to your scheduled CPAT date. Since CPAT guidelines specify that all applicants must be given an opportunity to attend 2 orientation sessions within eight weeks prior to scheduled CPAT, any individual choosing not to attend 2 orientations must complete the Waiver of Orientations and Timed Trials Form, acknowledging that the practice sessions were made available to them and that they voluntarily waived the opportunity to participate in all sessions.

Fire and Emergency Services Training Institute will ensure that all candidates have full and equal opportunity to perform at least two (2) timed practice runs. These mandatory practice sessions will occur within thirty (30) days of the official test date. The practice session will be conducted exactly as the official CPAT, if a candidate passes the practice session; they can elect to use their passing score as an official CPAT time. The only difference between the practice sessions and an actual CPAT, is that if a candidate ‘fails/times out’ during this Timed Trial, they will be allowed to practice the rest of the course (on a scheduled CPAT day, if a candidate fails or times out, the test is stopped).

• Requires candidates to climb a 40 foot ladder and perform firefighter tasks. __________________________________________________________________________________________________
Student must ensure that he/she has the following items on the day of testing:
• Picture Identification card.
• Long track pants and shirt.
• Footwear with no open heel or toe.
• Student must complete a Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q, Form 1A) and if required a Medical Clearance Form 1B, signed by your physician, verifying you are physically fit to participate in the CPAT.
All loose jewelry must be removed prior to testing.
Payment must be made when registering for courses. We reserve the right to cancel seven days prior to any course in which the minimum registration is not achieved.
