Toronto Pearson TodayGTAA Staff Pitch in for “Spring” CleaningDate of Release: 2007/06/19
More than two dozen GTAA employees recently stepped out of their regular work environment, lathering on sunscreen and arming themselves with a supply of garbage bags, to be a part of the annual Spring Creek cleanup.
This yearly activity organized by the GTAA’s Environment department allows employees to take a hands on role in the beautification of the airport while making a positive contribution to the natural environment. “Spring Creek runs through a number of communities north of the airport before passing through Toronto Pearson, making it susceptible to receiving garbage and other contaminants at various points along the watercourse,” says Randy McGill, GTAA Environment Manager. “As a corporation, the GTAA is committed to environmental stewardship and sustainability, evidenced by our ISO 14001 certification. Our employees have realized an opportunity to effect positive change with respect to the environment and have taken it upon themselves to make a real difference.” The portion of Spring Creek that traverses airport property stretches south of Derry Road to Courtneypark Drive . From the cleanup, 40 bagfuls of garbage were collected, including a number of items far too large to be bagged. From an inflatable boat to tires complete with rims and even a Christmas tree, volunteers had their work cut out. McGill says that he would like nothing more than to return to the same spot next year to see the area in pristine condition, but he’s realistic and says that wherever there’s an opportunity to improve the environment, the GTAA will be at the ready to pitch in.
