Peel Regional Police (PRP) Airport Division couldn’t have asked for a better day on June 3, when they hosted their annual Open House and Charity BBQ for Police Week and Airport Emergency Services.

Clear skies and warm temperatures brought out members of the airport community and the public alike for an afternoon of good food and educational fun for all.

On display were some of the specialized police units that aren’t usually available to the public on a daily basis, such as the Tactical and Rescue Unit and the Marine Unit. The Tactical and Rescue Unit specializes in potentially life threatening situations such as hostage takings and negotiations and high risk offender apprehension. Officers demonstrated their skills with a rappelling exercise. The Marine Unit displayed one of their 16 foot aluminum boats, which is used to patrol Lake Ontario on a daily basis, responding to distress calls, boating enforcement and boater education.

Other units on hand for information and demonstrations were the Explosives Disposal Unit, Airport Traffic, Airport Fire & Emergency Response, K9 Services, Wildlife Control, Emergency Planning and Airside Safety. The RCMP Drug Enforcement Unit and Airport Watch were also in attendance.

Helping with the BBQ were cadets from 2824 Cadet Organization Police School Royal Canadian Army Cadets (COPS RCAC). This is a nation wide youth program that is closely affiliated with PRP. Cadets from 2824 have assisted in several functions and events over the years. A total of $2,142.10 was raised from the BBQ and the sale of 50/50 raffle tickets, which went to Dreams Take Flight and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation .
