Toronto Pearson–Union Station Rail Link Update

Date of Release: 2009/01/23

Toronto Pearson–Union Station Rail Link Update
Metrolinx announced a revised proposal on January 21, 2009 regarding the rail link between Toronto Pearson and Union Station. As part of their due diligence in preparing for the Transit Environmental Assessment Process, Metrolinx is encouraging members of the public to visit their website (www.metrolinx.com) for information on public consultation.

As part of their “Big Move” program, upgrades and changes to the Georgetown GO system and the rail link are intended to make transportation around the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Areas easier, as well as to create construction jobs, stimulate economic growth for businesses and communities and reduce traffic congestion and air pollution.

The proposal outlines upgrades to the GO Weston stop to a full station that would accommodate both the rail link and the expanded GO service. Modifications would also be undertaken at the Bloor GO/Dundas TTC station to allow for the new services.

Premier Dalton McGuinty said he was "pleased" that the province was taking the next step towards building the link. Lloyd McCoomb, President and CEO of the GTAA supports the project’s advancement, having said in the past that the ability to travel quickly between the airport and downtown is an important piece of the transportation puzzle for the city and the regions that are served by Toronto Pearson.

Metrolinx reports that every year five million people travel between Toronto Pearson and downtown Toronto, showing the need for a direct link between these major travel points.
